Mositurize Your Skin Nicely...

I like using Vaseline's Total Moisture Lotion for my daughters'. They are African-American and they get very ashy especially during the winter. I especially like the smell of the Cocoa Radiant lotion. Cocoa Butter is a new scent.

Trying Out Covergirl's Blast Lipstick

By BrooklynShoeBabe · December 19, 2012 · 0 Comments ·

Below, I'm me trying out the ombre lip look using CoverGirl Lipblast in Vixen. I love the creamy texture of this one.
The other color I tried, Stunner, went on rough and felt gritty on my lips although the color was bright and longlasting.

Laundry DayLaundry Day by Maurie J. Manning

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Laundry Day: A shoeshine boy in early 20th century NYC goes on an adventure to find the owner of a lost red scarf. He encounters immigrants from all over the world as he hops from fire escape to clothesline. The illustrations are engaging and have few visual gags. The foreign phrases gives this book an extra boost, and could probably be used as a title for the Social Studies Common Core Standard. But I am confused as to what category this book falls into. Is it a picture book or is it a graphic novel? It has panels like a comic but I'm not sure.

The Rise of Slut-o-ween: Cultural Constructions of Femininity in Halloween Costumes

By BrooklynShoeBabe · October 20, 2012 · 0 Comments ·

To those with a critical eye, it should come as no surprise that ideals of womanhood are constructed, circulated, maintained, and imposed on individual and collectives of women through various channels of contemporary popular culture. To be a woman – how to look, act, dress, what body to have, which celebrity to idolize, what cocktails to adore – everything we know that defines the typical expectations of women is proscribed through some very specific gender norms and expectations. Through celebrities, magazines, movies, songs, and other cultural products, men and women learn the "appropriate" behaviors and attitudes to display for their sex, and they also learn the disciplinary consequences of not adhering to those gender norms. There has been rigorous academic scholarship coupled with more mainstream articles in popular journals and magazines reflecting on how media portrayals of women are unrealistic and damaging to health, both mental and physical, and of course, constant analysis and critique on where and how women’s bodies have been turned into nothing more than sexual objects available for the consumption of men. The bottom line is that women are 2 constantly told that their value in society resides in the physical body and that one must adhere to specific ideals of beauty in order to have access to and to wield the power that results from mastering the normative expectations of feminine embodiment and behavior. It is the beautiful woman who will get the best job, secure the right husband, elicit the desires of men and, in turn, have the ability to advance herself socially and economically.

I'm Fat Too...

By BrooklynShoeBabe · October 18, 2012 · 0 Comments ·

I am fat.

It’s. Not. A. Behavior.

But you know what is a behavior?

That’s right, making the choice to treat people as less than worthy of existence because of a physical characteristic.

I didn’t choose my height, my weight, my eye color, or my skin tone any more than you did. But every single day I can make the choice to treat others with dignity and respect.
